BIO

Rob Shanahan is a photographer whose work captures many of the world’s biggest music icons in moments of raw energy, authenticity, and performance.

Raised in Minnesota and based in Los Angeles, Rob’s path has always lived at the intersection of music, rhythm, and visual storytelling. A professional drummer and lifelong musician, he brings an insider’s perspective to the stage and studio—understanding timing, emotion, and presence not as concepts, but as lived experience.

His photography career has taken him behind the scenes and onto stages with some of the most recognizable artists in music history, documenting the spirit, intensity, and humanity behind the performance. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections around the world.

Rob’s published photography books have been inducted into the permanent collection of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Library & Archives in Cleveland, Ohio, recognizing the cultural significance of his visual storytelling.

VOLUME 1, with a foreword by Ringo Starr, and VOLUME 2, with a foreword by Sheila E. and epilogue by Keith Richards, is an acclaimed collection of who's who of music icons published in a coffee table 2-book set.

Beyond photography, Rob is also a keynote speaker and creator of The ICONS Blueprint™, a framework built from decades of experience in music and performance. Through his speaking, he translates lessons from the stage into principles of leadership, communication, and high-performance culture.

At his core, Rob’s work—whether through the lens, behind the drums, or on stage—is about one thing: capturing and communicating the power of human performance at its highest level.

Rob got his first drum kit when he was ten and his first camera when he was thirteen. He has been playing drums with the Hollywood Stones, the premier Rolling Stones tribute band, since 1994. His sensitivity as a musician has made him the first-call photographer for many of the world’s top artists.
Rob lives in Venice, California with his wife, daughter, and two cool Bengal cats.
